Benefits of Eating Bananas Depending on Their Ripeness
Choosing bananas also depends on their health benefits, as different degrees of ripeness offer different nutritional values. To help you choose, here's everything you need to know.
Green banana
Green bananas are firm and have a slightly tart flavor. They contain more resistant starch, a complex carbohydrate that our bodies digest more slowly, which benefits digestive health and blood sugar control. Resistant starch also acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial bacteria in the gut. However, due to their higher starch content, green bananas are more difficult for some people to digest.
Yellow banana
As bananas ripen and turn yellow, resistant starch breaks down into simple sugars like glucose, fructose, and sucrose. This makes bananas sweeter and easier to digest. Yellow bananas are rich in antioxidants, including dopamine and vitamin C. They are also a good source of B vitamins, such as vitamin B6, which plays a key role in energy metabolism.
Spotted banana
Ripe bananas, whose skin begins to show brown spots, are even sweeter and richer in antioxidants. Very ripe bananas are especially rich in soluble fiber, which aids digestion and prevents constipation.
