Those strips on your towels have a real purpose… and you might not have known it.

We’ve all seen it before, that famous embroidered line on our bath towels. Subtle but undeniably present, it often sits at one end, like a textile signature we no longer even question. But what if we told you it’s not just there for decoration? Yes, this mysterious band actually has a very specific function – and it might surprise you.
A towel is not just… a towel
When we choose a bath towel, we think about its softness, thickness and ability to absorb water quickly. But we rarely think about one small detail: the woven edge, also known as the “dobby edge”. Yet it is this very band that makes all the difference between a towel that lasts a long time… and one that falls apart after just a few washes.
The “role of the dobby edge”: much more than a decorative element
According to home textile specialists, particularly those at the American company Towel Hub, the dobby edge is far from just an ornament. This special weave, usually placed 5 or 10 cm from the edge, fulfills several important functions:
It prevents the fabric from fraying: by interrupting the continuous terry, this edge stabilizes the fibers and limits wear over time.
It reinforces the structure of the towel: it acts as a support band that helps the towel maintain its shape even after many washes.
It makes it easier to fold: this band creates a stiffer area that allows for a nice and even fold, perfect for neat storage in the linen closet.
A practical and stylish touch.
In addition to being useful, this famous edge adds real visual value. Some are discreet and tone-on-tone, while others have attractive patterns or a contrasting weave. They give the towel a more elegant, almost “hotel-like” look, while still fulfilling its reinforcing role.
