Did you know a tiny kitten once survived being trapped inside a working ATM machine in Fort Smith?

In July 2022, firefighters from the Fort Smith Fire Department were called to a surprising emergency after bank technicians at a Regions Bank location reported faint meowing sounds coming from inside an ATM.

At first, it was unclear where the sound was coming from. But after careful inspection, they discovered something unexpected hidden behind the machine’s metal panels: a small grey tabby kitten.

Somehow, the kitten had crawled into the internal cash dispenser area of the ATM without getting caught or injured by the moving mechanical parts inside the machine.

A Delicate Rescue Inside a Bank Machine

Once the kitten was located, rescuers had to carefully dismantle parts of the ATM to reach it safely. Because the machine contains sensitive motors, rollers, and electronic components, the operation had to be done slowly and precisely to avoid harming the animal.

Firefighters worked with bank technicians to carefully open access points and gradually free the frightened kitten.

After the rescue was completed, the kitten was safely removed from inside the ATM and taken for medical evaluation.

A Safe Outcome at the Animal Shelter

The kitten was transported to Fort Smith Animal Haven, where staff members examined him to ensure he had not suffered any injuries during his unusual adventure.

To everyone’s relief, the kitten was found to be healthy.

Veterinary technician Ashley Deane helped provide care and monitoring after the rescue. Despite the stressful experience, the kitten appeared surprisingly calm and stable.

Shelter staff later gave the kitten a memorable name: “Cash,” inspired by the unusual place where he was discovered—inside a machine filled with money.

How Could a Kitten End Up Inside an ATM?

Incidents like this may sound impossible, but animal experts explain that kittens are capable of squeezing through extremely small gaps due to their flexible skeletons and soft cartilage.

A young stray cat exploring its environment can easily fit into openings just a few inches wide, especially when looking for warmth or shelter.

Unfortunately, this curiosity sometimes leads them into dangerous places such as car engines, drainage systems, vending machines, or other enclosed mechanical structures.

In this case, it appears the kitten crawled into the ATM through a small access point and became trapped inside.

Why These Types of Rescues Happen More Often Than People Think

Fire departments across the United States regularly respond to animal rescue calls involving unusual and tight spaces.

Cats and kittens are especially known for getting stuck in unexpected locations because they are naturally curious and agile. While most cases involve simpler rescues like trees or walls, more complex situations occasionally occur.

However, finding a living animal inside a functioning ATM machine is extremely rare. The combination of mechanical systems, security features, and enclosed space makes this type of rescue highly unusual.
