Why do your hands go numb?

Contrary to popular belief, this numbness is not solely a consequence of aging. It can occur at any age and for various reasons. Let's take a look.

1. The cervical spine is affected.

In many cases, the cause lies in the cervical spine. A common pathology? Cervical osteochondrosis, a deposition phenomenon affecting the intervertebral discs, particularly between vertebrae C5 and C7.

Pressure on this area can damage the nerves that supply the hands. The result: numbness, which can affect the following:

• the inside of the hand, right up to the last fingers
• back of the forearm and several fingers
• the side of the hand that faces the thumb and index finger

Good to know    : Headaches can also be accompanied by such neck pain.

2. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Do you spend a lot of time at the computer? Do you play a musical instrument or perform repetitive movements? Then you could be prone to carpal tunnel syndrome

This condition occurs when a nerve in the hand is pinched at the wrist. Numbness then develops in the hand and fingers, but not in the back of the hand. Repetitive movements are often the cause.

3. Inflammation of small joints

In finger arthritis, the numbness is concentrated in the fingers. This is followed by stiffness or pain in the joints

4. Shoulder or elbow problems

Joint disorders of the shoulder or elbow can also cause symptoms in the hand or forearm

5. Metabolic disorders

Diabetes, some liver and kidney diseases, and hormonal disorders can lead to progressive numbness of the hands

People who drink excessive amounts of alcohol or smoke are more likely to develop this type of disorder, which often affects the limbs and upper arms.
